How do I install ScreenToGif on Windows?
Installing ScreenToGif from the Run box takes five short actions and no browser download.
- Copy the install command. Select Copy in the install box to copy the winget command for ScreenToGif.
- Open the Run box. Press Win+R on the keyboard.
- Paste and run. Press Ctrl+V, then Enter. A window opens, fetches the official setup MSI from GitHub, installs it and closes.
- Approve the prompt. Select Yes if Windows asks for permission to install the app.
- Open ScreenToGif. Find ScreenToGif in Start, then choose Recorder, Webcam, Board or Editor in its start-up window.
The same command works in PowerShell or Windows Terminal if you want to watch its output. The winget package NickeManarin.ScreenToGif lives in Microsoft's community package repository, and its manifest points at the setup MSI on the project's GitHub release page.
What is ScreenToGif?
ScreenToGif is a screen recorder and GIF editor for Windows, written by Nicke Manarin and published on GitHub as NickeManarin/ScreenToGif. Its start-up window offers four parts: a Recorder for any region of the screen, a Webcam recorder, a Board for recording freehand drawing, and an Editor where the captured frames land.
Free and open source
MS-PL licence, public source code, no watermark and no paid tier.
Record, then edit
F7 starts, F8 stops, and the frames open in an editor for trimming and timing.
Many outputs
GIF by default, plus APNG, WebP, AVIF, MP4, WebM and still images.
Version 2.43.2 came out on July 28, 2026. The recording guide walks through a first GIF with the default hotkeys and the Save as dialog.
Which install route should I choose?
Every route installs the same program from the project's own files, so the choice is about convenience. The Run-box command is quickest on a PC that has winget and makes updates a one-line job. The setup MSI suits a PC without winget, and the portable zip suits a USB stick or a PC where you cannot install software.
| Route | Command or file | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| winget (Run box) | NickeManarin.ScreenToGif | Fastest: one paste, and winget upgrade later |
| Official setup MSI | ScreenToGif.2.43.2.Setup.x64.msi, 71.7 MB | Any x64 Windows 10 or 11 PC; includes .NET |
| Portable zip | ScreenToGif.2.43.2.Portable.x64.zip | No install; settings stay next to the program |
| Light setup MSI | ScreenToGif.2.43.2.Light.Setup.x64.msi | Smaller file on a PC that already has .NET 9 |
| Microsoft Store | ScreenToGif in the Store | Store installs and Store updates |
| Chocolatey | choco install screentogif | PCs already managed with Chocolatey |

How does ScreenToGif compare with other GIF makers for PC?
ScreenToGif is the free GIF maker for PC that pairs a screen recorder with a frame-by-frame editor, and it has no watermark or paid tier. ShareX is the closest free alternative, while Snagit and Easy GIF Animator cost money after a trial.
| Program | Price and licence | What it records | Editing |
|---|---|---|---|
| ScreenToGif | Free, open source (MS-PL) | Screen, webcam and sketch board | Frame-by-frame editor |
| ShareX | Free, open source (GPL-3.0) | Screen recording (GIF) | No frame editor |
| Snagit | Paid, 15-day trial | Screen video, exported as GIF | Screenshot and video editor |
| Easy GIF Animator | Paid, $29.95 one-time | Video fragments only | Animated GIF editor |
The free GIF maker for PC comparison adds Free GIF Maker and the Microsoft Store apps, measured installer sizes, and the steps to turn a video into a GIF.
Which ScreenToGif file should you download?
For most Windows PCs the right ScreenToGif download is the x64 setup MSI, which is also what winget installs. The Light files are smaller because they leave the .NET runtime out, so they only make sense on a PC that already has .NET 9.
| Build | File | Size | Needs .NET 9 runtime | SHA-256 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Windows x64 setup MSI | ScreenToGif.2.43.2.Setup.x64.msi | 71.7 MB | No, included | b494e929ac250d0e09cf2803cd172cc5580d9c35df179b022b451304a06df4a7 |
| Portable x64 zip | ScreenToGif.2.43.2.Portable.x64.zip | 69.7 MB | No, included | 42a0b53d67ecae22698b4881ffb2c9c7a9049663f5fbdd2edb779e1971000664 |
| Light x64 setup MSI | ScreenToGif.2.43.2.Light.Setup.x64.msi | 7.1 MB | Yes | 37aa0a58daeafbb068ed5039d93892399a25568610b63b7d1e6c3f007d10b8cc |
To check a download, open PowerShell in the folder that holds it and compare the result with the table:
Get-FileHash .\ScreenToGif.2.43.2.Setup.x64.msi -Algorithm SHA256 The SHA-256 values come from GitHub's own digest for each release file, and the x64 setup MSI hash matches the one recorded in the winget manifest. Full builds have included the runtime since version 2.36, and the app moved to .NET 9 in version 2.41.3.
Is ScreenToGif safe to download?
ScreenToGif is safe when it comes from one of the project's own channels. The source code is public under the MS-PL licence, and the same builds reach you through four official channels:
- GitHub Releases: every installer, portable zip and MSIX package with its SHA-256.
- winget:
NickeManarin.ScreenToGifin Microsoft's community repository, which installs the GitHub MSI. - Microsoft Store: installs and updates through the Store.
- Chocolatey: the
screentogifpackage.
Copies on general download portals are repackaged by third parties, so the hash is the quickest way to confirm one matches the official file. After installation the app checks for updates by default and asks before it installs one, and recordings stay on your PC unless you add an upload preset under Options → Cloud.
How do I update or remove ScreenToGif?
ScreenToGif checks for new versions by default and asks before installing one. On a winget install you can also update from the Run box or a terminal:
winget upgrade -e --id NickeManarin.ScreenToGif To remove it, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and uninstall ScreenToGif; the GIFs you saved stay where you put them. The portable build needs no uninstall: delete its folder, including the Settings.xaml file next to the program.
Frequently asked questions
Is ScreenToGif free?
Yes. ScreenToGif is free and open source under the Microsoft Public License (MS-PL), with no watermark, trial or paid tier. The developer accepts donations, but every feature works without one.
Does ScreenToGif work on Mac or Linux?
No. ScreenToGif is a Windows desktop program built on .NET for Windows, and the project publishes only Windows installers, portable zips and MSIX packages for x64, x86 and ARM64.
Do I need .NET 9 to run ScreenToGif?
Only for the Light builds. The full setup MSI and portable zip include the .NET runtime, so they run on a clean Windows 10 or 11 PC. The Light files are smaller but need the .NET 9 Desktop Runtime installed first.
What if Windows says winget is not recognized?
That PC lacks Microsoft's App Installer, which provides winget. Install App Installer from the Microsoft Store, or skip winget and use the Download button in the install box, which fetches the same setup MSI from GitHub.
How big is the ScreenToGif download?
The 2.43.2 x64 setup MSI is 71.7 MB, because it carries the .NET runtime with it. The Light setup is much smaller at 7.1 MB, but it needs .NET 9 installed separately.
